Camino Del Norte - Self Guided Walk

The Northern Route consists of 5 stages and is a beautiful walk along the Cantabrian Sea coast with charming fishing villages, beautiful seaside resorts, the rugged peaks of the Picos de Europa and classic towns, rich in art and history, lining the route. Sections were used by Christian pilgrims who arrived at Spanish northern ports by sea to make their way to the shrine of St James. With its cooling breezes in summer, dramatic landscapes and sandy beaches this coastal route is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to the French Route of the Camino de Santiago.

Camino Del Norte has five stages which you can walk independently. You can choose to do all five – or perhaps just one or two.

Camino Del Norte has five stages which you can walk independently. You can choose to do all five – or perhaps just one or two.

Stage 1: San Sebastian - Bilbao (145kms 8 days/7 nights)
San Sebastian is a stunning and sophisticated seaside city, as well as a foodies paradise. Stroll down the Playa de la Concha and try one of the city’s many Michelin-starred restaurants and some of the best pintxos (Basque country tapas) in Spain before you start your Camino! San Sebastián has 16 Michelin stars, the second highest number per square metre in the world.
Walking - average 25 km per day (5 -6 hrs)

Stage 2: Bilbao – Santander (127kms 6 days/5 nights)

Stage 3: Santander – Gijon (205kms 10 days/9 nights)

Stage 4: Gijon – Ribadeo (160kms 7 days/6 nights)
A high route dotted with classic stone villages, churches and convents.

Stage 5: Ribadeo – Santiago de Compostela (206kms 10 days/9 nights)
End at the shrine of St James in the magnificent cathedral.

Note: The trek requires a good level of fitness. Days average 23 kilometres of walking, but there are days of up to 30-32 kilometres. Although the route runs parallel to the sea it crosses inland for many kilometres in some parts. There are river crossings with some steep ascents and descents which are rewarded with tremendous views. Walking is mostly on pathways with some road walking similar to the French Route.
